As we celebrate Western Michigan University's 120th Anniversary, we invite you to make a meaningful contribution to the WMU Cold Case Program—a unique and immersive experience that equips students with essential skills for careers in law and law enforcement.
Empowering Future Investigators: Training in Forensic Science and Criminal Investigation Tactics
The WMU Cold Case Program offers a transformative opportunity for students seeking hands-on experience in the field of criminal justice. Students accepted into the Program undergo comprehensive training in forensic science, law, and criminal investigation tactics. They then assist detectives from the state police in researching cold homicide and missing person cases. This work helps Broncos acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for future careers in law enforcement.
Making a Difference: Assisting Police Detectives in giving Victim Family Members Closure
As part of the WMU Cold Case Program, students work closely with police detectives to organize cases, bring fresh perspectives on new interviews for old cases, assess the feasibility of DNA testing, and conducting research that supports ongoing investigations. This Program is open to applications from all Broncos with at least a sophomore standing. The Program has helped the state police give closure to two families of 35+ year old homicide cases (and they're currently helping detectives with 9 more cases).
Participating in the WMU Cold Case Program provides students with invaluable hands-on investigative experience. They gain a deeper understanding of the intricacies of the criminal justice system, applying their knowledge to real-world scenarios. Through this immersive program, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, setting a strong foundation for their future careers in law enforcement and related fields.
